A record of how abstract thought defies gravity to become the stage of life
Housing Development in a Former Colonization Village
Typology:
Residential complex of terraced single-family houses in an open block
Area:
1,600 m²
Location:
Cotorríos, Jaén, Spain
Status:
Completed (2019)
Budget:
€1,300,000 (PEM – Total Construction Budget)
Contexto:
The project proposes a new residential development in Cotorríos, a 20th-century agricultural colonization village in Jaén characterized by architecture with a strong rationalist influence and a close relationship with the landscape. The proposal is based on a study of this urban model, originally designed to serve an agricultural way of life, and its evolution toward new ways of living also linked to tourism, leisure and second homes.
The intervention seeks to extend the settlement while preserving its identity, scale and residential character, reinterpreting the principles of colonization-era architecture from a contemporary perspective.
Solution:
The proposal is organized through terraced single-family houses arranged in an open block, favoring the permeability of the complex, cross views and continuity with the mountain landscape.
The architecture recovers the volumetric simplicity, functionality and relationship with public space typical of the existing village, translating them into a contemporary language. The open block allows open spaces to be integrated and views toward the natural surroundings to be enhanced, forming a residential complex that is recognizable and coherent with Cotorríos’s urban structure.

Architecture has always been a reflection of its time; our responsibility is to imagine, design and build the next one.
We believe in an architecture capable of anticipating new ways of living, investing and building, developing projects that go beyond the present to meet the needs of the future.
